Paragraphs 1–2 of 4

Long ago, in a hot desert, there was an ancient pyramid. A wolf named Kito was walking near the pyramid, and he was very thirsty. The sun was high, and there was no shade anywhere. Kito saw a small lizard sitting on a rock. The lizard's name was Lila, and she was watching him quietly.

"Hello, little lizard," said Kito. "I am thirsty, and I cannot find water." Lila smiled and said, "I know the secrets of this desert. Follow me, and I will show you." She led Kito to a tall cactus. "This plant stores water inside its thick stem," she said. "Desert plants save water because of the scarcity of rain." Kito was surprised and happy to learn this.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb(-ed) / irregular verb

We use the past simple to talk about finished actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, and irregular verbs have special forms.

“ A wolf named Kito was walking near the pyramid, and he was very thirsty.
Tip: Remember that some verbs are irregular, like 'see' becomes 'saw' and 'find' becomes 'found'.
Present Simple: subject + verb(-s) for habits and facts

We use the present simple to talk about things that are always true or happen regularly.

“ This plant stores water inside its thick stem.
Tip: Add -s to the verb when the subject is he, she, or it.
Modal verb 'can' for ability and possibility

We use 'can' to show that someone is able to do something or that something is possible.

“ If we share, everyone can survive.
Tip: Use 'can' + base verb without 'to' (e.g., 'can survive', not 'can to survive').
