Paragraphs 1–2 of 4

In a dark, shadowy sea, a pirate ship named the Black Fang sailed alone. A big brown bear named Bruno was the captain. He had a map with a red X, and he wanted a treasure of gold and jewels. He did not listen to his small friend, Pip the parrot.

Pip said, "Captain, I see dark clouds. A storm is coming!" But Bruno laughed and said, "I am strong and brave. I do not need your fear." He sailed the ship straight into the storm. The waves were high, and the wind was loud. The ship started to break.

  • read and understand a short story about a pirate bear and his parrot friend.
  • recognise and use regular and irregular past simple verbs to talk about past events.
  • form negative sentences in the past simple with 'did not' and the base verb.
  • use 'could' and 'could not' to express past ability or inability.
  • answer simple comprehension questions about the story's characters and events.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb-ed / irregular past

Use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, and irregular verbs change form (e.g., sail → sailed, fall → fell).

“ In a dark, shadowy sea, a pirate ship named the Black Fang sailed alone.
Tip: Remember that irregular verbs like 'fall' become 'fell' and 'lose' become 'lost'—learn them as a list.
Past Simple Negative: subject + did not + base verb

Use 'did not' (or 'didn't') before the base form of the verb to make a negative sentence in the past simple.

“ He did not listen to his small friend, Pip the parrot.
Tip: After 'did not', always use the base verb (e.g., 'listen', not 'listened').
could + base verb for past ability

Use 'could' to talk about general ability or possibility in the past. The negative form is 'could not' (or 'couldn't').

“ He could not swim well.
Tip: Use 'could' for general past ability, not for a single successful action (use 'was able to' for that).
