In a dark, shadowy sea, a pirate ship named the Black Fang sailed alone. A big brown bear named Bruno was the captain. He had a map with a red X, and he wanted a treasure of gold and jewels. He did not listen to his small friend, Pip the parrot.
Pip said, "Captain, I see dark clouds. A storm is coming!" But Bruno laughed and said, "I am strong and brave. I do not need your fear." He sailed the ship straight into the storm. The waves were high, and the wind was loud. The ship started to break.

A2 · Past Simple, Past Simple Negative, could for past ability
Use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, and irregular verbs change form (e.g., sail → sailed, fall → fell).
Use 'did not' (or 'didn't') before the base form of the verb to make a negative sentence in the past simple.
Use 'could' to talk about general ability or possibility in the past. The negative form is 'could not' (or 'couldn't').
Don’t stop at every unknown word. Guess the meaning from context first, then check — that is how fluent readers build intuition.
