The monster, whose name was Grom, had huge claws and dark eyes. It broke the bridge that connected the two parts of the island. Nim picked up his wooden sword and ran to face the beast. He hit the monster's leg, but the monster laughed and knocked him down. Nim felt sad and wanted to give up, but he remembered his family's smile.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb-ed / irregular past form

Use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, but many common verbs are irregular (e.g., break → broke, feel → felt).

Tip: Learn irregular past forms by heart, and remember that the past simple is the same for all persons (I lived, you lived, he lived).

Past Continuous: was/were + verb-ing

Use the past continuous to describe an action that was happening at a certain time in the past, often interrupted by another action.

“ The monster broke the ropes, and Nim thought all was lost.

Tip: Use the past continuous for the background action and the past simple for the interrupting action (e.g., 'I was reading when the phone rang').

Modal verbs for ability and possibility: could / could not + base verb

Use 'could' to talk about ability or possibility in the past. 'Could not' (couldn't) means it was not possible.

“ He knew he could not win with strength alone.

Tip: After 'could', always use the base form of the verb without 'to' (e.g., 'could win', not 'could to win').
