A1 · Past Simple, there was/were, possessive adjectives

Learning Outcomes

  • Read a short story and understand the main events in the past.
  • Recognise and use regular and irregular past simple verbs like 'made', 'saw', and 'gave'.
  • Use 'there was' and 'there were' to talk about past existence.
  • Identify possessive adjectives (his, her, their) and understand who owns what.
  • Answer simple questions about the story's characters and actions.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: regular and irregular verbs (e.g., was, made, loved, put, saw, learned, gave, became, smiled)

Use the past simple to talk about completed actions and states in the past. Regular verbs add -ed (e.g., loved, learned, smiled), while irregular verbs change form (e.g., was, made, put, saw, gave, became).

“ Pip made sweet treats all day.
Tip: Learn the past form of common irregular verbs by heart, and remember that the past simple is the same for all subjects (I, you, he, she, it, we, they).
There was / There were + noun phrase

Use 'there was' with singular nouns and 'there were' with plural nouns to say that something existed or was present in the past.

“ In the Candy Kingdom, there was a little elf named Pip.
Tip: Remember: 'there was' for one thing, 'there were' for more than one. Don't confuse it with 'it was' or 'they were'.
Possessive adjectives: my, your, his, her, its, our, their

Possessive adjectives show who owns or is connected to something. They come before a noun and agree with the possessor, not the thing possessed.

“ Pip learned to share his work with his friends.
Tip: Match the possessive adjective to the person who owns the thing: 'his' for a male, 'her' for a female, 'their' for plural.
