Dr. Elara Voss had spent three years studying the ancient star maps in the Royal Library of Aetheria. If she hadn't discovered the hidden inscription on the third map, she would have never found the entrance to the Labyrinth of Forgotten Stars. However, her excitement quickly turned to worry when the stone door closed behind her with a heavy thud. She was trapped inside a maze that had been sealed for over five hundred years.

The labyrinth was not an ordinary maze. Its walls moved slowly, and the paths changed every few minutes, so Elara could not mark her route. She tried to use her knowledge of astronomy to navigate by the positions of glowing crystals on the ceiling. Therefore, she walked carefully, counting her steps and noting every turn. After an hour, she realised that she had been walking in circles and had not found a single exit.

Third Conditional: If + past perfect, would have + past participle

We use the third conditional to talk about imaginary situations in the past that did not happen, and their imagined results.

Tip: Remember that the 'if' clause uses 'had + past participle' and the main clause uses 'would have + past participle'.

Present Perfect: subject + have/has + past participle

We use the present perfect to talk about experiences or actions that happened at an unspecified time before now, often with 'for' or 'since' to show duration.

Tip: Use the present perfect when the exact time of the action is not important or not known.

Past Perfect: subject + had + past participle

We use the past perfect to show that one action happened before another action in the past.
