The Obsidian Trial: A Wizard's Resolve

Deep within the smoldering heart of Mount Vhar, the wizard Kaelen toiled in his obsidian lair, a cavern carved by fire and spite. Every surface gleamed with a sinister orange sheen, cast by the lake of molten rock that churned and spat just below his chamber, filling the air with the acrid scent of brimstone. He was not a conqueror or a hermit; he was a reluctant caretaker, bound by a centuries-old pact to keep the volcano's fiery beast asleep with a complex weaving of runic magic that had held for generations. Yet for three long nights, his anchoring spell had faltered, the runes flickering out like dying embers before they could take hold, and the mountain had begun to groan in its sleep.

On this fourth night, Kaelen chanted with every ounce of his waning strength, his voice raw against the hiss of steam that erupted from the fissures in the floor. He etched the runes faster, tracing them in the air with his cracked staff, but they burst into nothingness the moment they touched the ancient stone, scattering like sparks from a grindstone. A violent tremor rippled through the chamber, knocking him off his feet and sending shards of obsidian raining down from the ceiling, each one a glinting dagger. The beast below stirred, and for the first time, the wizard tasted the bitter ash of utter defeat, wondering if his promise was worth dying for.
