In a hidden laboratory under the city, there lived a clever rabbit named Remy. He had soft white fur and bright blue eyes that sparkled in the dim light. Every day, Remy explored the lab's many rooms, where scientists had left all kinds of interesting things. One day, he found a small, glowing machine that made delicious carrots appear with a single press of a button. Remy was amazed and thought, "This is my special secret!"

Remy used the machine every day, but he never told anyone about it. He felt happy and proud because he could have as many carrots as he wanted. However, after a few weeks, he noticed that his friends, the mice and the birds, looked hungry and sad. They searched for food in the lab, but there was very little to eat. Remy knew he could help them, but he was afraid that if he shared the machine, he would lose his special treat.

Learning Outcomes

  • Read and understand a short story about a rabbit's secret discovery.
  • Recognise and use regular and irregular verbs in the Past Simple.
  • Identify and use prepositions of place to describe locations.
  • Form and understand sentences with the Past Continuous.
  • Answer comprehension questions about the story's events and moral.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: regular and irregular verbs (e.g., lived, had, found, made, felt, knew, saw, decided, learned)

Use the Past Simple to talk about completed actions or states in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, while irregular verbs have special forms.

“ In a hidden laboratory under the city, there lived a clever rabbit named Remy.
Tip: Learn the past form of common irregular verbs (e.g., have → had, make → made, feel → felt) because they don't follow the -ed rule.
Prepositions of place: in, under, on, with, for, to (e.g., in a hidden laboratory, under the city, with a single press, for himself, to show)

Prepositions of place show where something is or happens. They help describe location and direction.

“ In a hidden laboratory under the city, there lived a clever rabbit named Remy.
Tip: Memorise common prepositional phrases like 'under the city', 'in the lab', and 'with a single press' to describe places accurately.
Past Continuous: was/were + verb-ing (e.g., was struggling, was full)

Use the Past Continuous to describe an action that was happening at a particular time in the past, often interrupted by another action.

“ One evening, Remy saw a tiny mouse struggling to carry a single crumb.
Tip: Use the Past Continuous with 'when' or 'while' to show an action in progress, e.g., 'He was struggling when Remy saw him.'
